Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a federal welfare program for the disabled and those over 65 years of age. The SSI benefit amount varies from state to state. To receive SSI you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be "disabled" using the same definition as is used for the Social Security Disability program; “The inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.”
  • Meet the income and asset requirements for the SSI program; click here to find income and asset requirements.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or fall into the group of limited exemptions to the citizenship rule; click here to find exemptions to the citizenship rule.
  • File an application.
SSDI & SSI
Claimants may receive both Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income benefits if the Social Security Disability benefits are low enough.
